Florida on a Tankful: The art of blacksmithing in Largo

https://www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/2021/11/18/florida-on-a-tankful–the-art-of-blacksmithing-in-largo-

LARGO, Fla. — The art of forging metal with just a hammer and your bare hands is a craft that’s been around for thousands of years, but how often do you see people doing it nowadays? Look no further than a local blacksmith in the historic small town of Largo.

Hammer meeting metal, that sound might not feel like music to your ears, but to Robert Buck with Wrought Iron Arts, it’s a symphony of sound that he doesn’t tire of hearing.

“It’s just like that old adage, strike while the iron is hot. We have to work the steel to make a world class blade,” Buck said.

In his home workshop he crafts and creates not just knives, daggers, and swords but also works of art with metal. A passion he’s been chasing and mastering since he took a few art classes in college.

But it wasn’t until he took his first blacksmith class back in the early 90s that he considered this work, a true profession, starting his own school of blacksmithing and welding.

Now decades later, he’s taken a hobby and turned it into a lifelong passion he loves to share with others.

His specific area of expertise lies in creating knives and other weaponry, but like any good artist if you come with an idea or a vision he’ll make it happen.

“We can make all those trendy ones you see on Forged in Fire or You Tube, if you want to make any knife, dagger, axe, spear, sword etc… just pull an image up on your phone and we’ll make it happen,” Buck said.

Robert shows that this age old craft of tempering and forging metals is one that still enchants to this day. Proving that the art of learning to blacksmith is a tradition just about anyone can get behind.

For more information on how to schedule a blacksmith & knife making class, welding class or plasma cutting class head to their website and ask for Rob.

Why choose Wrought Iron Arts?

When choosing a blacksmith & knife making school experience matters!

Some newbie blacksmith instructors claim to be the only this or that in their neck of the woods but when you want to make your very own knife, dagger, axe, or even sword in a fun and safe atmosphere choose Wrought Iron Arts where thousands of students have come to have a day of forgin’ fun and come home with a world class blade of (your choice) not 2 or 3 different kinds of knives only that the school chooses for you.

When making a world class blade there are no short cuts too. It takes a full day to forge, grind, sharpen, polish, and heat treat (just like they do on Forged in Fire) a “weapon of minor destruction” or “weapon of kitchen creation” as we like to call our sharp and pointy creations around here. Be wary of instructors who claim that handles are included in the production of your knife, dagger, etc… in the same day of your knife making class.

To properly add a handle or “scales” to your blade requires many hours for the proper types of glue to set, along with sanding, drilling for hard scales, and staining.

So in contrast we provide you complete verbal and written instructions for you to add a handle to your full tang blade of choice. Whether you want a wood, bone, antler, ivory, etc… scales or a leather wrap, tennis wrap, paracord wrap etc… for your blade we’ve got you covered. No expensive tools are required just a little time, let’s just call it your homework with the luxury of calling or emailing your teacher if you hit a snag. The best part is you can even skip the homework all together because many types of knives, daggers, axes, and swords don’t require handle material and are quite usable without any. So if you hate homework we got you covered there too! Heck we’ll even weld on guards, saw teeth, steel handles to axes, knives, daggers, maces, lances etc… We’ll do whatever it takes to make sure you get something sharp & pointy to play with immediately after your class!

Now if you still want a wood handle or “scales” for that bad ass knife etc… that you just made we now offer our new Knife Handle Making Class for those of you who just really, really hate homework and are too busy to tackle that project on your own.

~New~ Knife Handle Making Classes

If you want to make something crazy fun we got you covered there too! We’ve helped students make Klingon Bat’leths, Game of Thrones Long Claws, Final Fantasy Buster Swords, Lord of the Rings Orcrists and Morgul Blades, and on and on. For those of you who don’t want to channel their inner Klingon, Viking, Orc etc.. we’ve got you covered there too! We’ll help you make Bowies, tactical knives, hunting knives, Chef knives, Santokus, Krises, Kurkis, Karambits, Katanas, Kbars and many, many more.

So please come join us for a day of forgin’ fun here at Wrought Iron Arts where master blacksmith Robert Buck (who trained with a master blacksmith himself) will not only be your teacher, but also your cheerleader, and your wingman to guide you the entire way towards the making of your very own “blade of your choice” where thousands and thousands of happy students have come before you for over 26 years now.

And many, many more happy students!

Wrought Iron Arts on Fox TV

Wrought Iron Arts blacksmith Rob Buck being interviewed by FOX TV

LARGO, Fla. (FOX 13) – Pinellas County is home to a thriving arts community, from the Dali Museum to Vitale Brothers murals to The Playhouse Theater in St. Petersburg And as more people experience art, more want to create their own, which is where many art schools find their audiences.

At Wrought Iron Arts in Largo, students learn the timeless skill and art of blacksmithing from some of the best in the industry.
The school is run by Rob Buck. He and his team teach newcomers to make knives, swords, daggers, battle axes, and other “weapons of minor destruction.”
The goal is not to arm the Bay Area with homemade weapons. These items grant newcomers to iron works a practical starting point to the art of shaping metal.
Wrought Iron Arts has been in Largo since 1992, teaching thousands of students.
The Blacksmith & Knife Making Classes are small and personalized somewhere between two and six students at a time, and last about 7-9 hours.
Most of the class is about forging – or shaping nearly molten metal. The rest is spent grinding, polishing and treating the finished product.
“We will teach you how to forge your knife, dagger, axe etc… from the beginning to the end of the process,” Rob explained.
Most classes make the knives and swords, but he also teaches everything metal, including how to how to cut and weld. Students get to pick what they want to make.
“I guess my philosophy with teaching is first of all, it’s small classes. I demonstrate how to do something, usually once, maybe twice, depending on how fast the student picks it up,” Rob said. “Once I demonstrate it, I let them attempt it, and then they do it and I improve their technique or improve the way they are tackling the task I gave them how to do.”
His students range from no experience to some who have taken classes before.
“Classically, what the blacksmith would do is take whatever metal he had on hand and transform it into something else sort of like “old school 3-D printing”. For the most part, we take old wrenches, old automotive axles, coils, old crowbars, old files, old railroad spikes,” Rob said. “I want them to learn how to do it. Yes, they get the trophy. ‘I made a dagger or sword or a knife,’ but learning how to do it, basically we’re promoting the lost art of blacksmithing, bladesmithing, and all that. “
Rob says the art form of making knives goes back thousands of years. His goal is to spread that knowledge as far and widely as possible.
“When you see the gleam in a person’s eye as they are starting to get it, that’s the satisfaction I get, that’s why I do this,” he said.

Blacksmith & Knife Making Classes

Our Blacksmith & Knife Making Classes are not your typical “cookie cutter” forging classes that are common elsewhere. You will not have to make “one particular style of knife” that all the other students in the class are making like our competition does simply because their blacksmith instructor is not creative enough to give them options. I cater the classes towards what the student wants to make. If for example you’re a fan of “Forged in Fire” and interested in Bladesmithing then I gear the instruction toward making a knife or dagger. Your knife, dagger, sword, battle axe, or (whatever you choose to make) will be “full tang” forged and fully prepared to accept whatever kind of handle material at a later date on your own. I will go over how you can clad your “weapon of minor destruction” with wood, bone, antler, leather, para cord and so on. Even without any handle material whatever you choose to make will be quite usable and ready to KEAL! You’ll even get to “heat treat” your blade of choice just like they do on “Forged in Fire” too!

If the student doesn’t want to make a sharp and pointy weapon. I’ll give them suggestions such as fire pokers, garden stake wine or beer holders, plant hangers, bookends, etc… or better yet encourage them to think of something they would like to make and I’ll help them make it happen all the while teaching them the foundational skills to continue learning this form of blacksmith art.

Our classes are 1 full day of personalized instruction or about 7-9 hours long. Unlike our competition we limit our class size to just 4-6 students for our group classes and private classes can be reserved for parties of 7-8 students. Because of these small classes we can pack (a lot) more instruction and learning into our classes. You or who you are purchasing the class for will learn blacksmithing the “olde fashioned way” as people did hundreds and even thousands of years ago, from master blacksmith to apprentice.
